Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD):

A personality disorder is defined as persuasive, enduring and inflexible pattern of maladaptive inner experiences and pathological behaviours.

Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by19V(1)-S

1. A pattern of grandiosity admiration.

2. Strong need for admiration.

3. Lack of feeling of empathy

4. Envy others and feel that other’s are envious of them.

5. Feels that his behaviors and thoughts are greatest.

6. Is arrogant in attitude and behaviour.

7. Believes that I am the best of all.

8. Is preoccupied in fantasies of unlimited success, power etc.

The individual’s suffering from NPD are very sensitive to criticism and defeat. They have a very vulnerable self esteem. Even the smallest of defeat can make them feel very humiliated and they can retort back in rage or withdrawal. The excessive need for admiration and insensitivity to the feelings of others has an adverse effect on their interpersonal relationships.

The periods of grandiosity can be associated with hypomania, while the sustained feelings of humiliation can be associated with
persistent depressive disorder, major depressive disorder, social withdrawal etc. Other personality disorders that can be associated with NPD are histrionic, borderline, paranoid and anti-social personality disorders.

Prevalence :

0%- 6.2% of community samples show the prevalence of NPD 50-75% of the diagnosed cases are males.

Causes:

The exact causes are unknown. Most cases have a childhood history of over- indulging parents, undeserved praises and unreliable parenting.
